Bed in a Box — Is it Worth the Hype?

It seems like beds in a box are everywhere these days. Bed in a box is a catchall term for mattresses (generally foam mattresses) that come rolled or folded up, can be ordered directly from the brand’s website, and are left outside by your door. Sounds pretty convenient. But are they worth the hype? Are they as good as mattresses from traditional retailers? Spoiler alert: we don’t think so. Read on to find out why we — a mattress retailer — think trying your mattress in-store is still the way to go. 

A mattress is a big purchase. It’s worth testing out in person.

Your bed is a big investment. And it’s a worthwhile investment if you get the right mattress for you. The one-size-fits-all approach that bed-in-a-box systems take doesn’t work if you have sleeping habits or preferences outside a pretty narrow range. 

Visiting a mattress retailer gives you the opportunity to try out different types of mattresses with different levels of firmness. Testing a mattress in person will give you a far better idea of how your body feels on a specific mattress type than any video or written review could. And If you’re considering an adjustable bed frame, you should absolutely come into the store to try one out.  

Setting up a bed is at least a two-person job.

Mattresses, especially king size mattresses, can be unwieldy — not to mention heavy! If you buy a mattress online and have it shipped to your house, who is going to help you haul it into (or up to) your bedroom and onto your bed frame?
