Mattress Sizes 101

Does mattress size matter? Yes, of course it does! The quality of your sleep, in large part, depends on how comfortable you feel in your bed. Your sleep situation (the person or pets who share your bed), the room you sleep in, and your personal preference will determine the right mattress size for you. So, let’s talk about typical mattress dimensions.

King beds
A typical king size mattress measures 76 inches wide by 80 inches long. For those who want to trade a little width to get a longer mattress, a California king mattress measures 72 inches wide by 84 inches long.

King size mattresses are great for couples, tall individuals, people with pets who like to cuddle and anyone who wants extra room to stretch out.

Queen beds
A queen size mattress will generally measure 60 inches wide by 80 inches long. So, you lose almost a foot and a half in width from a king bed. However, if your bedroom dimensions make a king size mattress too snug a fit, a queen mattress can comfortably fit two people. You might even squeeze a pet or two into bed, but that really depends on how much you move around at night and how much space you need to sleep well.

Full beds
Full size mattresses come in regular length and extra long. A full mattress measures 53 inches by 75 inches, and the XL version measures 53 inches by 80 inches, making it the same length as a queen size mattress. A full mattress is great for kids or single adults who have a small bedroom. Anyone nearing 6-feet tall will benefit from the extra length of the XL.

Twin beds
Twin mattresses, like full size mattress, come in regular length and extra long. A traditional twin mattress is 38 inches wide by 75 inches long. A twin XL measures 38 inches wide by 80 inches long. A twin bed is a great upgrade from a toddler bed and works well in dorm rooms or shared room situations. Again, anyone nearing 6-feet tall will appreciate the extra length of an XL.

Twin mattress are also often used together as a split king mattress. Couples who like a different type of mattress, or simply sleep better on separate mattresses, push two twin mattresses together on a king frame.
